About us

Rocky Mountain Caving is a non-profit quarterly journal of caves and caving, published by the cooperating National Speleological Society grottos of Colorado. The first edition was published in March, 1984 and issues have been released every year since.

Our editorial and production team includes experienced cavers and experienced magazine professionals.

Our History

1984

Founding

The Southern Colorado Mountain, Front Range, and Sangre de Cristo grottos join together to form a new joint publication. Colorado and Northern Colorado grottos soon join.

1987

Desktop Publishing

Rocky Mountain Caving was one of the very first National Speleological Society publications to adapt desktop publishing. With the new format, printing of the journal improved.

2010

Website Launch

Rocky Mountain Caving moved into the digital age with the launch of the website. The site was expanded and modernized during the decade, prior to relaunch in 2024.

2015

New Editor

Following the retirement of Richard Rhinehart as founding editor, Donna Frazier became editor of the journal and with a fresh new graphic look, encouraged many new authors.

2020

New Editor

Rob Kolstad became Rocky Mountain Caving‘s third editor. With extensive editing and publishing experience, Rob created a professional color journal that is among the Society’s finest.

2024

40th Anniversary

Rocky Mountain Caving has come far in four decades of publishing. From its simple beginnings, the journal and accompanying website provide a superior experience for subscribers.

Editor in Chief

Rob Kolsted

Rob Kolstad has edited Rocky Mountain Caving since 2020. He is a veteran newsletter editor with stints at the Dallas-Fort Worth Grotto,
Southern Colorado Grotto, and the Texas state newsletter The Texas Caver under his belt.


Digital Editor

Richard Rhinehart

Founding editor of Rocky Mountain Caving, Richard retired from editing in 2014 to manage web content. He is the former editor of the Caving in the Rockies and Virgin Passage newsletters. A journalist by training. A caver since 1973.


Lead Proofreader

Donald G. Davis

Donald has been caving since 1957. He is a prolific author of caving content, including significant scientific reports about caves and karst. Donald is an honorary member of the National Speleological Society.
